Truman men's soccer coach Don "Duke" Cochran was taken into protective custody during the weekend and is the subject of an ongoing investigation of property damage and vandalism to a vehicle.
Sgt. Steve Farnsworth of the Kirksville Police Department said police officers on foot patrol observed Cochran at 1:15 a.m. Sunday and took Cochran into protective custody. The officers thought he was under the influence of alcohol, Farnsworth said. He was released 12 hours later, according to the Adair County Sheriff's Department.
"We are currently investigating property damage where [Cochran is] a suspect," Farnsworth said. "... We're waiting on some estimates for the investigation."
Farnsworth said the damages under investigation involve dents made to a car hood. Cathy L. Humphrey is the owner of the damaged vehicle, according to the police report. The damage occurred on the 100 block of South Elson Street, according to the report.
No charges have been filed at this point against Cochran or any other individuals, Farnsworth said.
Athletic director Jerry Wollmering said the University is evaluating Cochran's situation and is getting the necessary people involved in that evaluation.
"We're definitely trying to gather all the information we can, and then we'll determine our action from there," he said.
Wollmering said it is too early to say what action the University might take when the investigation is complete but that there could be differences in the way the situation would be handled if the men's soccer team was in season.
Cochran did not return phone calls.
