The women's swim team brought the Div. II national title back to Kirksville. The women's soccer team regained supremacy of the MIAA, winning its eighth conference title in the last nine years. Senior track star Sean Bergstedt continues to break records.

It's been a largely successful year for Truman athletics - one that was marked with some firsts (the football team played its first night game in more than a decade) and lasts (women's basketball head coach John Sloop won't return next year after eight years on the sidelines).

In light of this week being the end of the year awards issue for the Index, I've come up with a few of my own awards to help recap the past year for Bulldog sports.

Most impressive win: Women's soccer vs. the University of Nebraska-Omaha (Sept. 8). The Bulldogs came from behind to win 2-1 and beat UNO (a major non-conference rival) for the first time since 2004. Unfortunately for Truman, UNO got its revenge by knocking off the Bulldogs in the national tournament. This rivalry will get even bigger next year when the Mavericks join the MIAA.

Worst loss: Baseball vs. Fort Hays State University (Apr. 12). The Bulldogs lost 32-5 to the Tigers and allowed 30 or more runs for just the fourth time in the 38-year history of Bulldog baseball. Yes, there was a strong wind that was blowing to the outfield fences, and yes, the Truman pitching staff had to battle injuries all season, but a team never should allow 32 runs to an opponent that currently is one game above .500.

Best single-game performance: Matt Ticich against Upper Iowa University (Sept. 8). The junior quarterback made the first night game at Stokes

Stadium in almost 12 years extra special when he passed for 493 yards and four touchdowns. The performance put Ticich on the path to becoming a second team All-MIAA selection.

Best highlight reel play: Junior guard Banks Estridge sank a 75-foot shot during the men's basketball team's 73-68 win against Missouri Western State University on Feb. 20. The shot was a buzzer-beater to end the first half and put Truman ahead 37-36.
