Troy Paino, provost and vice president for academic affairs, will become Truman's 16th president on May 10.

Matthew Potter, Board of Governors chairman, announced the Board's decision in a press release today.

"It's a very exciting time for me personally," Paino told the Index in a phone interview this morning. "I just am honored that the Board has the confidence in me to be able to lead Truman into the next decade."

Until he begins his presidency, Paino said he will continue working in his role as provost.

Paino also said he will use this time to travel Missouri and the country to meet with people and help the University move forward.

"The good thing about the situation is that I have a close working relationship with [Interim] President [Darrell] Krueger," Paino said. "We will spend the next several weeks continuing to help Truman face the economic challenges."

Former University president Barbara Dixon announced her resignation in September 2008. Krueger stepped in as president on an interim basis the next month, and he will conclude his presidential duties at the end of this academic year.

In April 2009, the Board formed a presidential search committee, headed by Board member Ken Read.

After nation-wide search yielded 66 applicants, the committee selected five finalists and called references and conducted phone interviews and background checks. The committee then invited two of the finalists for on-campus interviews. The second candidate declined the offer, and the committee announced on Dec. 21 that Paino was the sole presidential finalist.

Paino addressed students, community members, faculty and staff at presidential forums Jan. 21. He answered questions about funding concerns and student life at the University.

Paino began working as provost at Truman in 2008. Before coming to Truman, he served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Winona State University (Minn.). He has taught history classes at both Truman and Winona State.

Paino received his Master of Arts and Ph.D. in American studies from Michigan State University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in history and philosophy from Evangel University (Mo.) and his J.D. at the Indiana University School of Law.

"The Board is delighted to offer Dr. Troy D. Paino the opportunity to serve as president of this great University," Potter said in a press release. "With his well-rounded background in history, academic administration, and law, he is the perfect candidate to lead Truman into the second decade of this millennium."

The Index will have full coverage of Paino's hiring as president in Thursday's edition.
